Recruitment & Selection Training
Recruiting people can and has proven to be a stressful experience for many hiring managers we speak with. The timing is typically less than ideal as you are either short staffed or looking to replace a leaver often with potential new candidates lacking the required knowledge or skills. Add to the mix the pressure associated with making the right decision and that many hiring managers receive little or nothing in the way of formal training, and it is easy to see why recruiting can cause so many headaches; and that’s before we even begin to think about the time this process can take.
The ability to successfully recruit the best candidates is an essential skill of any people manager and with the right tools and structures in place, it can be done in a timely manner and add significant value to your team and productivity.
At Donovan Training Associates, we are passionate about supporting HR teams and people managers. We design and facilitate highly practical recruitment training to help make the recruitment process smooth and practical. There is no magic wand or formula for guaranteed success, but we can support you with the measures that will maximise your chances of finding the perfect match for your requirements.
Recruitment Training Tailored Specifically for Your Needs
At Donovan Training Associates, we believe that optimised and effective training cannot be achieved with an off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all solution. As a result, our recruitment training is bespoke, tailored to the specific needs of your organisation and the individual delegates.
How Our Recruitment Training Works
Whether you have an existing recruitment process that you would like to be rolled out to your team or if you are in the process of designing a recruitment strategy from scratch, we can offer a learning solution that is relevant to your needs.
The process begins with a no obligation consultation where we will identify your requirements, learn more about how you currently recruit and what success would look like if your recruitment process and skills were robust. We will then prepare a bespoke proposal which we can then amend to ensure we meet your specific requirements.
Many of our clients ask us to facilitate onsite or at a local venue of their choosing but if you prefer to come off site, we can offer facilities in our Oxfordshire offices which are designed to host workshops in a professional and comfortable environment.

Recruitment Training Course Outline: An Example
As mentioned above, all our training is tailored specifically to you and considers the needs of your organisation and the needs of your people. Where possible, we endeavour to provide examples and scenarios which are relevant to your business and therefore, which your people can relate to.
However, we understand that when comparing learning providers, it is helpful to have a better understanding of their approach and what a typical day of learning might look like, and so we have put together the following as an example which we hope you will find useful.
Course Overview
Our recruitment training is typically facilitated in a single one-day session or it will form part of a wider people management workshop, all designed and tailored to your needs. Depending on the number of learners, your location, and demands of the business, training can either be provided:
-
In-person
-
Face-to-face via online real-people video training broken down into three bite size sessions
We also provide customised pre-prepared learning materials, including videos and interactive resources. These are useful for learners to utilise as reminders or to learn in their spare time.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the training, participants will:
-
Create a list of factors to consider before seeking authority to recruit
-
Be able to distinguish between gut instinct and unconscious bias
-
Recognise the scenarios where unconscious bias can occur during the recruitment process
-
Take away some practical tips on how to guard against unconscious bias during the recruitment process
-
Create a list of core values for a role that they are familiar with or recruiting for
-
Distinguish between hypothetical questions and competency-based questions
-
Take away a structure for competency-based interviews
-
Design competency-based questions for a role that they are familiar with or recruiting for
-
Be able to apply the STAR methodology of drilling down to detail
-
Take away a technique for improved note taking during the interview
-
Have had the opportunity to practise note taking and interviewing during a mock interview
-
Have received feedback and reflected on successes and areas for improvement
-
Have clarity on how to manage the period between the offer stage and start date
Course Structure:
This example is based on a one-day recruitment training workshop. We would typically ask participants to think of a live vacancy or a role that they are familiar with. We would then base the workshop around recruiting for that position.
This ensures that the skills learned are practical and relate to them individually as opposed to taking on generic theory.
-
Factors to consider before seeking authority to recruit
-
Designing a recruitment strategy, including assessment activities
-
Clarifying what can and cannot be asked during the recruitment process
-
Designing competency-based questions and avoiding common pitfalls when interviewing
-
Structuring follow up questions
-
Tips for seeking further clarification and managing nervous candidates
-
Closing the interview
-
Candidate care between the offer stage and start date
-
Setting new starters up to succeed
Certification
If requested, we can offer certificates for our training.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this level of training course. It is suitable for anyone looking to improve their recruitment skills, regardless of their current level of expertise. However, if you have a large number of delegates, you may prefer to create cohorts based on department or staff seniority level so that attendees feel more comfortable being open with discussing pain-points and challenges.
Resources:
After the workshop, we will send out resources that are specific to the needs of the audience. Typical examples include links to podcasts, TED talks, books etc. When suitable, we also embed relevant TED talks into the workbooks that we provide which are all in an interactive PDF format.

Case Study:
“Anthony and his associates have been delivering a variety of courses, programmes and coaching for us for several years. They are always happy to partner with you on content creation and we consistently receive excellent feedback from those who attend”
Alex Williams, Head of Learning and development at GSMA, UK
We were invited to facilitate a workshop by GSMA who operated within the digital marketing industry. They had an existing recruitment structure in place and wanted to enable their management team to work closer with their people and culture business partners when recruiting.
The workshop was run as a recruitment campaign. Before attending, participants were sent tailor made CVs for a relevant role and asked to choose who they would select for an interview. We then discussed the rationale for the decision making during the workshop, designed some assessment activities for the role and then the participants interviewed their chosen candidates, played by the facilitator.
The people and culture business partners were invited to participate so they could see recruitment from the perspective of the hiring managers and vice versa. As well as reinforcing relationships, the participants left with some new assessment activities, fresh competency questions that were ready to use and some renewed confidence having had the opportunity to practise their skills in a safe but realistic environment.
