Employee Retention Training
According to the CIPD in June 2024, the most common length of service is between two and five years. The average turnover - or churn - for UK workers is 34%. This splits into 27.4% who move to a new employer and 6.6% who are not working one year later (year 2), which could be due to study, retirement or long-term sickness, for example. These statistics only add to the widely held view that employee retention is as challenging as recruiting the right people in the first place.
At Donovan Training Associates, we are passionate about supporting people managers with the skill sets and confidence required to retain their employees.
Employee Retention Training Tailored Specifically for Your Needs
At Donovan Training Associates, we believe that optimised and effective training cannot be achieved with an off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all solution. As a result, our staff retention training is bespoke, tailored to the specific needs of your organisation and the individual delegates.
How Our Employee Retention Training Works
Whether you are experiencing a higher than desirable level of employee turnover or you are looking to proactively put measures in place to retain your people, we can offer a learning solution that is relevant to your needs.
The process begins with a free, no obligation consultation where we will identify your requirements, learn more about how you currently recruit and how you look retain your employees. We will then prepare a bespoke proposal which we can amend as required to ensure we meet your specific needs.
Many of our clients ask us to facilitate onsite or at a local venue of their choosing but if you prefer to come off site, we can offer facilities in our Oxfordshire offices which are designed to host workshops in a professional and comfortable environment.

Employee Retention Training Course Outline: An Example
As mentioned above, all our training is tailored specifically to you and considers the needs of your organisation and the needs of your people. Where possible, we endeavour to provide examples and scenarios which are relevant to your business and therefore, which your people can relate to.
However, we understand that when comparing learning providers, it is helpful to have a better understanding of their approach and what a typical day of learning might look like, and so we have put together the following as an example which we hope you will find useful.
Course overview
Our staff retention training is typically facilitated in either a bite-size session, or it can form part of a wider people management workshop, all designed and tailored to your needs. Depending on the number of learners, your location, and demands of the business, training can either be provided:
-
In-person
-
Face-to-face via online real-people video training broken down into three bite size sessions
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the training, participants will:
-
Take away a structure for onboarding new starters in line with your specific policies and procedures
-
Reflect on the reasons behind strong and poor performance
-
Recognise three key criteria required to motivate ourselves and how this can be applied in practice
-
Take away a structure to help them facilitate and practice authentic conversations around retention
Course Structure:
-
Why do people currently stay and enjoy working here?
-
What are the potential reasons for people leaving and how can people managers influence this?
-
Tips for setting new starters up to succeed
-
Structuring a conversation when we believe someone is ready for a new challenge
-
How to keep ourselves and others motivated
Certification
If requested, we can offer certificates for our training.

Case Study:
“As I did not get the opportunity to say in the final session, I wanted to write and say thank you very much for a thoroughly enjoyable programme. Your delivery was great, nicely balanced between theory and practical examples / role play (and I hate role play!). I have reflected and learnt as a people leader and will be much the better for having participated”
We were asked to facilitate a bite sized workshop with one of our clients in the construction industry.
The purpose behind this particular session was to guard against complacency regarding employee retention. In this instance, employee retention was low for the right reasons after a couple of challenging years post pandemic. The business was now back in a good place, so the leadership team wanted to support their people managers by proactively focusing on best practice and how to continue their success.
It was an upbeat session as we celebrated what was currently working well but participants also left with some fresh ideas on how to retain their people.
